Web Design in Cambridge
Web Design in Cambridge is a pretty hotly contested search phrase, apparently. At least, that's where City Visitor have been investing their efforts - they want to be top of Google.co.uk for web design in Cambridge. And they're doing very well. They offer free, unlinked listings on their site for web designers in Cambridge, but follow this up with the offer of upgrading to a premium, linked, listing.
Cambridge Web Design
What's wrong with that, you may ask. Of course, it's nothing new and City Visitor are not alone - there are dozens of large directories and paid-for search engines out there. However, it was City Visitor's enthusiastic approach regarding web design in Cambridge that originally made us realise that we fundamentally disagree with such a directory's business model. We think it is detrimental to the Internet. If we take City Visitor's success in web design in Cambridge and apply it to hundreds of thousands of other searches, it's not hard to see that unless Google changes, it may soon become useless. The first few pages of results might simply be composed of various directories, containing links to websites that are listed not according to relevance, but to how much each client has paid. Boo!
I Thought This Page Was About Web Design in Cambridge
Well it sort of is. You see, directories like City Visitor grab top spot in Google by cramming the key elements of each page with words and phrases related to web design in Cambridge (often called Search Engine Optimisation). Additionally, of course, they are linking to sites that are to do with web design in Cambridge - other web design companies. The combination of a large, popular site, containing lots of relevant links leads to a high relevancy score with Google. We believe however that directories like City Visitor give no additional value to these links, beyond collecting them all in one place (which is what Google does, after all), and that their size is a misleading guide to how useful they are.
Wouldn't it be fun, we thought, if we could turn the tables on City Visitor, knock them off top spot and then phone them up for once to sell them a "premium listing" on our site for Web Design Cambridge?

* of course, the more cynical of you may think this is purely a ploy to get top of Google to serve our own ends. We don't disregard this view - in fact, we expect we will generate more enquiries. However, our best and preferred leads come via recommendation and our primary aim with this page is simply as an exercise to see if we really know as much about Google as we think we do. Secondly, we hope to point out, in a light-hearted way, how an Internet of directory-dominated searches may not be for the best in any possible world.
